Fairview, Goats Do Roam
We recently visited for the first time, the vineyard of Fairview just outside Paarl. Although we had not tasted their wines before, we have become addicted to their cheese, which you can buy in most of the local shops to Hout Bay. They do an extensive range and all are very good.
The vineyard has goats and at the entrance to the vineyard there is a very unusual goats shed, its multi storey and the goats access the floor via an external spiral walk way.
The wines are okay, some are most definately better than others but none really jumped out and said buy me. The cheeses are another thing all together and we liked most of them and indeed bought a selection from the shop.
We also had lunch in the aptly named Goatshed, we had a bottle of chardonnay, one that we had previously tasted and liked, and tow pannini's, Carol had roasted vegitables, pesto and farmhouse chedder and I had pastrami and roasted veg. In both cases they turned out to be a bit more than a fancy italian sandwich and were a meal in themselves. They also did cheese platers and cold meat platers along with good looking salads and nice bowls of olives to start with. Our meal with wine was R106.

A good place to visit, the goats are interesting, I learnt something on my visit as Carol pointed out to me that goats have rectangular pupils in their eyes.... teachers!!! The cheese is also worth a visit and a nice place for lunch. The wines you can live without, but still over all a good place for a relaxed lunch stop.
